Day 10 of Tour 3

Fort William to Broadford

Today’s plan was simply to have an early start then take the A830 from Fort William to Mallaig, cross on the ferry to Armadale, then take the A851 then the A87 to the Broadford campsite. To slightly reduce the time spent on or close to the A road from Fort William, continuation on the minor road that leads to Ben Nevis Holiday Park lead through some countryside scenery to the A830 very close to the Caledonian Canal.

The surface of the A830 was excellently smooth for many miles and the traffic from 6 am to 7 am was very light. A following wind, (starting off gentle) made a pleasant change today so the ride started exceptionally well. Overall, the 60+ miles with some tough hills was completed with the legs feeling surprisingly unscathed.

Connor at the Lochailort Inn had wide experience and was knowledgeable, passing on useful information on food and drink. Porridge was not on the written menu but the ample portion provided on request was much appreciated.

The chat with cousin Fiona passed so quickly that my arranged meeting with my only cousin not met yet this year (and her husband) was a little later than intended. In front of a log fire on this very wet afternoon much ground was covered and one of my assumptions about the early life of another cousin was shown to be hugely inaccurate.

Here at a sodden Skye Campsite the large shelter with its six picnic tables and the new charging points is being well used. Drying of various types of kit is a major concern.
