Abington to Lambhill
Part 1
Today’s route was similar to that of Day 2 of Tour 2 except that NCR 74 was followed through Lesmahagow, allowing an early shop. A 5:30 start (before it was warm enough for midges) was too early for service station food at 10 miles (breakfast there starting as late as 7am) so it was picnic fare until the delicious coffee and vegetarian breakfast here at Rosso Bothwell. This is about 30 miles from Abington by the direct route and the 20 miles remaining are flattish.
Part 2
The NCR route from Rosso Bothwell to Lambhill was exactly 20 miles. At 10 km from Rosso was the foot/cycle bridge over the Clyde near Morrisons. This time the signpost pointing at right angles to the bridge to be crossed near Uddingston School was ignored, saving an unnecessary loop. Last time high temperatures encouraged sunbathers and drinkers. This time the unique Inn Deep by the Kelvin was almost empty and there a chance conversation with two ladies out on their bikes revealed that one was a carer for dementia sufferers! She was happy to provide some tips which will be tried soon.
Today the temperature remained cool and good for cycling with mainly light showers. After 150 miles the new bike remains the smoothest in my experience.
My tent is now pitched and coffee and soup in the cafe allow writing this while charging the phone.
Part 3
For the second day in succession the offer of coffee at my campsite was accepted gratefully, this time setting me up for a visit to Herbert’s care home. It was pleasing to be greeted by name by Charles on reception and to see Herbert in a chair rather than in his bed (which he seems to prefer at the moment). Herbert is waiting for results of a blood test and is eating in his own room. It was a surprise to be presented with a plate of food. This was tasty and enjoyed also by Herbert.
Herbert talked and mumbled a lot but there was little that made sense to me. The highlight was a joke – a moment of reverting to his former self.
