Day 1 of Tour 3

This start of Tour 3 followed the route of Day 1 of Tour 2 – a distance of 43 miles with 2000 feet of ascent. The conditions today were less pleasant, including one early shower with hailstones. The final hour was in heavy rain, when warmer clothing would have eased the discomfort.

Another difference today was that the new cafe at the Old Stables in Beattock, although stated recently to be open daily from noon to 3 pm, was shut. Fiona at this Mount View Campsite at Abington did not know why, but kindly provided me with coffee. This went down well, warmed my hands and gave time for the rain to clear before the tent erection.

A picnic evening meal, mainly assorted leftovers from home cooking, was consumed in the tent to avoid the midges. Late sunshine may be sufficient to dry the clothing that is hanging inside.
