Day 1 of Lap 3

Dumfries to Innerleithen via Moffat

Sitting here in the Traquair Arms at Innerleithen with a pint brewed nearby and after having pitched my tent at the campsite, there is much to be grateful for.

It is a very windy day but generally this has been favourable, and never has the uphill from the car park for the Grey Mare’s Tail seemed so easy. Also, a few miles to Templand and the 10 km to the Innerleithen turn off from the A701 were very quick with a strong wind directly behind. It always surprises me that the traffic is so light on the A701 scenic route to Edinburgh taking in the Grey Mare’s Tail. From the outskirts of Moffat for 8 miles only 24 cars and nearly the same number of motorbikes passed, mainly in flurries of a few at a time so there were ample periods to appreciate the view of the valley.

At Moffat I had asked advice from a local about the best coffee and had my mug filled from the Ariete to accompany cheese and boiled egg and other remnants from home eating. The coffee was excellent and Ariete will become a regular.

Showers today were very mixed, some being drenching from a black sky but none lasting long.
