Day 5 of Tour 3

Inver to Invernahaven

The above heading has just struck me as special and looking carefully at the letters should help in memorising both place names!

With a 6:20 am start the A9 was quiet so a short distance on it to NCR 77 saved some distance and time. Out of Pitlochry, NCR 7 was picked up then followed all the way to the left turn to Invernahaven.

The weather started off fine for cycling then deteriorated. Today’s distance of 52 miles with 3100 feet (a Monroe!) of ascent, a chilly and sometimes wet headwind up the Drumochter Pass to an altitude of 1500 feet even on the brand new bike with low gears required 1200 active calories.

On the positive side, the many rivers and waterfalls are at their best and no measures are required to prevent sunburn and sunstroke. North of the Drumochter Pass is classed as the Northern Highlands and mileages to Inverness will be counted down tomorrow. The poor weather has hit the campsite and there was no queue for the washing machine or tumble drier (sadly necessary).
