Lochranza to Kilmelford
There was a headwind for much of the day. Early in the ride it was cold, and for approaching half an hour accompanied by rain, making the going unpleasant. The sunshine for much of the rest of the day was greatly appreciated and the scenery with blue and turquoise seas and hence blue skies admired.
As usual, the route took in the picturesque port of Tarbert, the Ardrishaig end of the Crinan canal then much off its length before passing numerous Neolithic sites on the way to Kilmartin. The road reached a high point of 560 feet on the final leg to Kilmelford, bringing the total ascent to 3500 feet. With the addition of a trip back to the campsite to collect a forgotten rucksack, the total distance of nearly 50 miles was also greater than of late.
Conversations with a few cyclists and hill walkers about some of their varied intentions added to the satisfying nature of the day and lengthened my to-do list.
