Day 6 of Lap 5

Invernahavon to East Daviot

The wind dropped yesterday evening, allowing midges to fly, then through the night it increased and there was some rain. The day has been blustery and mainly dry with some sunshine. The wind has been mainly in roughly a helpful direction so the cycling was not too tiring. Statistics for the day were a distance of 50 miles with 2500 feet of ascent and 1140 active calories.

From Kingussie much of the path by the roadside was out of action because of fallen and damaged trees. Aviemore was very busy and there are many outdoor activities possible within a few miles. It is a good place for eating, drinking and shopping. The path through the woodland to Boat of Garten was enhanced by the blooming heather. At Boat of Garten the steam locomotive at the station was visible at close quarters from the community garden.

The A9 roadworks a few miles from this campsite were negotiated carefully and damage to the bike avoided. Cycling is so much easier than the walking with the bike that was necessary during Lap 3! Shortly after my arrival at Auchnahillin an alarm signalled that the area was experiencing a power cut, which prevented my campsite payment by card. The cut did not last long and the electric kettle was soon working. Several cyclists will be here later and it will be good to compare notes.
