Day 4

Kilmelford to Kilchoan and Sanna Bay in Ardnamurchan

Today’s journey included ferries both between Oban and Craignure and from Tobermory to Kilchoan. An early start meant that the main road to Oban was not busy and after two tough hills and 16 miles before breakfast my own food at the Oban ferry terminal followed by a coffee from the cafe at the terminal went down very well. The next coffee would be at The Coffee Pot in Salen, nicely breaking the ride to Tobermory.

Tobermory has on the high street both a fine bakery and a village stores selling delicious and nutritious food. See later.

Arriving at the Kilchoan Campsite on April 12 in the Scottish school holidays and a long period of fine weather I found it difficult to believe that it had been closed would be opening the following day.

Sanna Bay was on my bucket list and a resident invited me to park my bike in her garden while I walked over the dunes to inspect the small beaches of white sand. The area was fragile and camping there forbidden so I looked for possible wild camping sites on the way back to towards Kilchoan. A resident stopped her car and told me the whereabouts of a track that would lead me to a suitable spot out of site of the road. I was delighted to find the right amount of flat ground for my small tent and free from sheep droppings as a bonus. The photo was taken from my tent. There was even a perfect large stone for parking the bike close by. The closed campsite was now seeming more like a blessing! The loud song from several skylarks the next morning was forgiven!
